The Committed Pig: What Real Commitment Looks Like (and Why It’s the Secret to Resilience)
By Micah Hill | Flip the Grit Switch™ Podcast
Today’s story starts with a restaurant sign and a truth bomb:
“The chicken participated. The pig committed.”
I was in downtown Summit, New Jersey, visiting my friend Claire Diab, founder of the American Yoga Academy, before going to speak at Seton Hall University. As we were driving through town, a restaurant sign caught my attention: The Committed Pig.
It made me laugh, and I had to stop and get a photo.
If you’ve never heard the phrase, here’s the gist:
In a bacon and eggs breakfast, the chicken is involved, but the pig is committed.
Most of us want bacon-level results with chicken-level commitment.
We crave transformation without tension, progress without pressure.
But resilience, the kind that lasts, requires true commitment.
Commitment Is Tested When It’s Inconvenient
Commitment doesn’t count when everything’s easy. It’s proven when things get uncomfortable.
You say you’re committed to your health… until it rains on workout day.
You’re committed to your business… until progress slows.
You’re committed to peace… until a snarky email hits your inbox.
That’s when you discover: are you showing up like the chicken or the pig?
Commitment digs deep — it says, “Even when it’s hard, I’m in.”
It’s about presence over avoidance.
I’ll be honest — I’ve been the chicken before.
There was a season when I looked committed but wasn’t. I was creating, tweaking, and building systems… but not really putting myself out there.
I stayed in the comfort zone of control instead of the expansion of courage.
When I finally realized that, I stopped performing commitment and started living it. And it’s a constant decision to continue to do so.
Let’s get one thing straight: the metaphorical pig dies for breakfast.
My view: commitment isn’t about giving everything up.
It’s about coming fully alive to what matters most.
When you live your goals instead of circling them, you ignite momentum.
That’s where the Grit Switch flips — from half-hearted to wholehearted, from dabbling to devotion.
I see it every day in my coaching clients:
The executive who stops chasing calm and starts training it.
The leader who shows up even when it’s messy. The coaching client that still shows up even after the breakthrough.
Here’s your Grit Switch Activation this week:
Think about the area of your life you’ve been half-in.
Is it your wellness routine?
Your next business pivot?
Your personal growth work?
What would happen if you stopped circling and went all in — mentally, emotionally, energetically?
Remember: resilience rewards persistence.
Commitment is about staying when comfort says go.
So… what’s your version of the Committed Pig?
