I was thinking about how life is full of competition, whether on the tennis court, the golf course, in the office, or even in our personal relationships; we’re constantly driven to outdo others, prove our worth, and come out on top. But what if I told you that the key to true success and fulfillment lies not in crushing the competition but in finding ways to collaborate and lift each other up?

In fact, a study by Stanford University found that participants who collaborated on a task persisted 64% longer than those who worked alone, showcasing the power of teamwork and cooperation. Today, I wanted to explore the idea further. I want to explore the science of competition and collaboration and how a shift in mindset can lead to greater success, happiness, and fulfillment in all areas of life. I’m going to share some insights from my time in the garbage business and some practical strategies for cultivating a collaborative mindset in our own lives.

A Tennis Story and a Lesson in Collaboration

Life always inspires me, and today’s post is no different. I want to share with you a story about my nephew, an avid tennis player who recently found himself caught between two rival academies. One is just a short bike ride from his house, where he played when he was younger and kept a membership. The other has been his primary training ground for the last several years.

Recently, when a photo of him showed up on Instagram with some of his friends from the academy down the road at a tournament, the primary academy director got upset.  My nephew felt torn and confused and didn’t want to jeopardize his relationship with his coach or training. It turns out that negative reaction came about because my nephew got caught smack dab in the middle of the directors’ “thoughts. How often have you caught yourself in the middle of something that shouldn’t have anything to do with you?

Mulling over the predicament, I couldn’t help but notice how it mirrors situations I’ve faced in our family garbage business, which got me thinking about the nature of competition in general, collaboration, and what it truly means to succeed. In our family garbage business, we quickly learned that the key to success wasn’t just about outperforming or underpricing the competition but about fostering a culture of collaboration and teamwork. Ultimately, that led to loyal, long-term clients because they knew we valued them beyond just the dollar amount of their account. This experience taught me a valuable lesson about the power of an abundance mindset. When we focus on creating value and serving others versus what we can get out of a situation, it becomes evident there’s more than enough success to go around. By contrast, if you operate from a scarcity mindset that sees every win for someone else as a loss for ourselves, it only breeds fear, resentment, and missed opportunities.

Cultivating an Abundance Mindset

So, how can we cultivate this mindset of abundance in our own lives? It starts with recognizing that someone else’s success doesn’t diminish our unique talents and experiences. When we celebrate and support others, we create a virtuous cycle of growth and opportunity. We attract like-minded individuals who share our values and vision; together, we can achieve way more than we could alone. Let’s dive into some game-changing strategies that can help you cultivate a collaborative, abundance-oriented mindset in your life.

Reframe Failure as Feedback

Imagine this: you’re an entrepreneur, and you’ve just poured your heart and soul into launching a new product. You spent countless hours perfecting every detail, from the packaging to the marketing campaign. But when you finally release it to the world, the response is crickets. Sales are low, and you start to feel that sinking sensation in the pit of your stomach, that voice in your head whispering, “You failed. You’re not cut out for this.”

But what if, instead of seeing this as a failure, you viewed it as an opportunity for growth? Someone once said, “Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s part of success. Imagine taking a deep breath, sitting with your team, and asking, “Okay, what can we learn from this? How can we use this feedback to make our product even better? I think what you’ll find is that feeling of defeat starts to transform into a sense of determination because you’re no longer a failure—you’re just a problem solver, ready to tackle the next challenge.

Cultivate a “Both-And Mentality

Picture this: You’re a rising star at a top marketing agency. You’ve just landed a major client, and you’re feeling on top of the world. But then, in your next team meeting, your colleague shares that they’ve also brought in a huge account. Suddenly, that green-eyed monster starts to rear its ugly head. You find yourself thinking, “Why can’t that be me? If they succeed, doesn’t that mean I’m falling behind?”

But look at it differently: What if you could embrace a “both-and perspective? What if you could genuinely celebrate your colleague’s success while staying focused on your goals? Imagine walking up to them after the meeting, giving them a high five, and saying, “Congrats on the new client—that’s a huge win for the team. I’d love to hear more about how you landed the account. Suddenly, that sense of competition starts to melt away, and this feeling of camaraderie and shared purpose replaces it. Research has also shown that teams that embrace this kind of collaborative mindset are more innovative and creative, which leads to better results for everyone.

Focus on Progress Over Perfection

At the moment, these strategies can be easier said than done because they require us to confront some of our deepest insecurities and fears and take risks that can feel uncomfortable or even scary. So, how do we move beyond these challenges and embrace a truly abundant way of being? One key is to start small and focus on progress over perfection.

Think of it like a thought or action ladder. Rather than overhauling your entire worldview overnight, look for ways to practice collaboration and generosity in your daily life. Maybe it’s offering to help a colleague with a project, even if you have no immediate payoff. Maybe it’s reaching out to a competitor and finding ways to work together.

Ultimately, embracing competition and cultivating a collaborative mindset is about recognizing that true success is not a zero-sum game. It’s about understanding that when we lift each other up, we create that rising tide that benefits everyone. It’s about knowing that there is enough love, success, and fulfillment to go around, and by working together, we can achieve far more than we ever could alone.

A Personal Experience from the Garbage Business

That reminds me of a time in the garbage business. I had just landed a big contract with a chain that had locations outside of our service footprint. I felt pretty proud of myself, but I needed to figure out how to get the few locations outside our areas serviced. I reached out to a competitor who had been vying for the same contract. Instead of me feeling threatened or him being resentful that he hadn’t gotten the bid, we decided to work together. Long story short, we ended up partnering on several other projects. Not only did it benefit both of our companies, but it led to me starting a national accounts division within our company that focused on regional chains. That experience taught me that everyone wins when we approach competition with a mindset of abundance and collaboration.

As for my nephew, his story is still unfolding, but I have no doubt that by focusing on his own growth, both on and off the court, and surrounding himself with people who lift him up, he’s going to achieve great things. And who knows, perhaps one day he’ll be the one leading a tennis academy, fostering a culture of collaboration and abundance that inspires the next generation of champions.

My Final Thoughts

Ultimately, life’s greatest victories aren’t measured by the trophies on our shelves or the titles on our business cards. They’re measured by the lives we touch, the relationships we build, and the positive impact we leave on the world. So embrace an abundance mindset, knowing that there’s more than enough success to go around. Remember that true greatness is not a solo pursuit—it’s a team effort built on a foundation of trust, respect, and shared purpose.

As I wrap up, I want to leave you with a challenge this week: Look for one opportunity to practice collaboration over competition. Maybe it’s reaching out to a rival and finding ways to work together. Maybe it’s offering your skills or expertise to someone who needs it without expecting anything in return. Or maybe it’s simply taking a moment to celebrate someone else’s success, knowing that their win is not your loss.

I’d love to hear about your experiences with collaboration and abundance. Let’s start a conversation about how we can all work together to create a brighter future for everyone. This is Micah Hill signing off and reminding you that there’s always room for more winners in the game of life.
