Audiograms:

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you wished you could communicate with everyone around you, only to be hindered by a language barrier? It’s something that’s been happening to me more and more lately. Finally, I decided it was time to do something about it. Let me take you through my story.

A Spark of Inspiration Over Lunch

One day, I was enjoying my favorite local Greek restaurant, savoring a delicious salad with marinated chicken kebabs—a perfect go-to healthy lunch. While people-watching, a poster in the window suddenly caught my eye. It read “Spanish for the Workplace.”

At that moment, memories flashed through my mind of countless times I’d encountered Spanish-speaking individuals and found myself at a loss for words. I remembered trying to communicate with a landscaper, struggling even with a Spanish translation app. In high school, I took German to impress my dad and French to navigate the French Riviera, but Spanish was never on my radar.

But in today’s world, it feels like everyone and their dog either speaks Spanish or needs to. It was as if the universe was sending me a sign—time to level up my language skills. Right then and there, I decided I would sign up for the Spanish class, even though it had already started a week prior. I was pumped and ready to dive in headfirst.

The Reality of Learning as a Busy Professional

But here’s the thing: nobody tells you that learning a new skill as a busy professional is not all sunshine and rainbows. You’re already juggling a million things, from work deadlines and meetings to family commitments and maintaining some semblance of a social life. Adding a new language to the mix can feel like balancing on a unicycle on a tightrope while spinning plates.

I wasn’t ready for this. I was already two lessons behind, meaning three hours of catch-up, plus the unpredictable work and life curveballs. I found myself floundering to keep my head above water. The teachers reached out, wondering if I disliked the program or had issues. The truth was, I had bit off more than I could chew.

Embracing the Journey of Personal Growth

It reminded me of when I decided to get my master’s degree at Georgia Tech while working full-time. What was I thinking? But as crazy as it seems, pursuing personal growth and development is crucial for our long-term success and well-being, no matter how jam-packed our schedules may be. The Harvard Business Review even found that lifelong learning is essential for staying relevant and competitive in today’s fast-paced job market.

The Importance of Neuroplasticity

But why is learning new things so valuable regardless of age? One word: neuroplasticity. Our brains can rewire themselves and form new connections whenever we learn something new. It’s like giving our brains a CrossFit workout. As we age, parts of our brains slow down, but challenging ourselves to learn new skills gives those areas a mental protein shake to keep them in tip-top shape. Learning one new skill can improve other cognitive abilities too, making it the ultimate brain hack.

In a world changing faster than any TikTok trend, being adaptable and constantly learning is non-negotiable. It’s our secret weapon for navigating life’s twists and turns and coming out on top. I know you’re thinking there’s never a perfect time to start something new. I would agree because life tends to get in the way. The key is to start anyway and be persistent and consistent.

Practical Tips for Lifelong Learning

On my journey with Spanish, I decided I wasn’t doing it for credits; I was doing it to learn and on my terms. Here are a few practical tips to help you on your learning journey:

  1. Make it Fun: Learning doesn’t have to be boring. I downloaded entertaining apps, listened to Spanish radio (even though they talk at warp speed), and watched movies with subtitles. Making your learning experience enjoyable helps shift your perspective.
  2. Embrace the Discomfort: Learning something new can be awkward and frustrating. When I felt like a goofball trying to verbalize what I was learning, it was a sign of growth. Push through the discomfort and keep going, even if it’s not perfect.
  3. Apply It in Real Life: Look for opportunities to use your new skills in everyday situations. Whether learning to cook, practice photography, or master a musical instrument, integrating it into your daily life is priceless.
  4. Take Strategic Breaks: Learning can be mentally draining, so knowing when to take a breather is important. Engage in different activities or simply rest. Fresh eyes and renewed energy make challenges more manageable.

My Final Thoughts

Remember, learning is a personal journey. Experiment and find what works for you because the more you enjoy the process, the more likely you are to stick with it. Using these strategies, I transformed my Spanish learning experience from a struggle into a fun and fulfilling adventure. I’m not fluent and may never be, but I’ve come a long way from where I started. It’s about the journey of personal growth and the sense of accomplishment that’s truly rewarding.

John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” By embracing lifelong learning, we open ourselves to endless possibilities and growth, becoming adaptable and more fulfilled individuals.

Your Challenge

Think about something you’ve always wanted to learn or a skill that could benefit you. What’s one small step you could take today to start your learning journey? Whether it’s signing up for an online course (shameless plug: check my wellbeing course on my website), reading a book, or reaching out to a mentor, the most important thing is to start and keep going.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. It is never too late to start learning something new. Until next time, this is Micah Hill wishing you all the best on your lifelong learning adventures. Talk to you soon.
