Let’s dive into a topic that’s ever-present yet often unsettling: change. Life has a knack for throwing curve balls our way when we least expect them. One moment, everything is smooth sailing, and the next, we’re confronted with change that shakes our world. Today, I want to share a story that got me contemplating how we respond to change.

This story centers around my nephew, an equestrian who rides at a beautiful barn just outside Charlotte. The barn is steeped in history, situated on an old gold mine, and surrounded by majestic trees that have stood the test of time. Exploring the mine’s entries on a hot summer day is a treat; descending the stone staircase feels like entering a fairytale.

But then, change knocked on this paradise. As Charlotte expanded, developers eyed rural lands, including the barn. Long lots were sold off, and houses began to pop up. It was heartbreaking to witness the once peaceful trails being confined to the area around the paddocks. It felt like watching a piece of history slowly disappear.

This led me to think about how change affects us all in big and small ways. Think about your life for a second. Is there a change that’s been weighing on your mind lately? Maybe it’s something at work, in your personal life, or a relationship that’s shifting. It’s entirely normal to feel a part of you holding onto the past, resisting the change, and wishing things could stay the same.

It’s okay to feel that way; it’s a natural part of the change process. Believe me, change can be scary, and it’s natural to cling to the familiar. But what if we started to see change as an opportunity rather than a threat?

A Shift in Perspective

I love Wayne Dyer’s quote: “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Think about that for a moment. What if we applied this wisdom to our own lives? Instead of resenting changes, we could start looking for the hidden blessings and opportunities within them.

Take my sister’s experience as another example. When she first moved to Charlotte nine years ago, the road leading to her community was flanked by picturesque farmland and a lush golf course. Fast forward three years, and the same road transformed into a hub of towering apartment buildings, hotels, and office spaces. While there was a sense of loss for the natural beauty, these changes brought amenities and conveniences that made life easier and more enjoyable.

This perspective shift—from focusing on loss to recognizing growth—allows us to embrace new experiences and opportunities.

Embrace the Change

So, I challenge you: Think about a change that’s weighing on your mind. How can you start to look at it differently? How can you find the hidden blessings within it? Maybe it’s a chance to learn a new skill, meet new people, or let go of something holding you back.

Remember, you possess an incredible power—the power to choose how you respond to change. You can resist and stay stuck in the past, or you can embrace it and open yourself to new possibilities.

Practical Tips for Navigating Change

But of course, you’re wondering how to adjust to change when you can’t find the silver lining. Here are three unique strategies to help you navigate:

  1. Create a Change Soundtrack: Music has the power to shift our mood and energy. Put together a playlist of songs that inspire and uplift you. Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, let the music work its magic.
  2. Engage in a Change Ritual: Rituals can be grounding and empowering during times of change. Create a simple ritual—like lighting a candle, taking deep breaths, or repeating a mantra—that supports you.
  3. Find Your Change Champions: Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you. These could be friends, family, or even historical figures. Create a “Change Champions Board” with quotes and stories to remind you that you’re not alone.

My Final Thoughts

So, what do you say? Are you ready to start looking at change in a new light? Remember, if you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. The power is in your hands.
