R-E-S-P-E-C-T commands your attention and immediately, you know I’m talking about Aretha Franklin, right? The queen of soul passionately demands what she’s earned, and you feel the conviction in her voice. This timeless anthem to gaining respect through hard work and grit resonates with us for a reason.

Today, let’s dive into what it takes to get to the point of respect, whether that’s in your personal or professional life.

The Drive for Respect

We all want to be loved and respected. That’s why the song “Respect” is so inspiring and catchy—it makes us want to sing along. When you think of those who have reached the pinnacle in their fields, like LeBron James dominating basketball or Oprah building her billionaire brand, it’s clear they share one truth in common: hustle has set them apart.

When I say hustle, I’m talking about it in a positive light. While “hustle culture” often gets a bad rap these days, the reality is that few truly successful people who deserve respect for their accomplishments had lucky breaks or achieved their success by flukes. It’s usually earned through blood, sweat, and tears.

The Hard Truth About Success

Many of us hope to be the exception—the overnight success—but that rarely happens. For instance, there are around 150 million podcasts, but only 44% have more than three episodes. Literally half of those podcasts aren’t really podcasts. There are over 700,000 podcasts with fewer than 10 episodes.

So, if you look at those numbers, the odds of someone sticking with something and earning respect by doing things long-term are slim, right? I like my odds; this is episode 34, and I’ve already surpassed the three and ten-episode benchmarks. But many people start things with grand ideas and just can’t follow through. It’s hard. It requires grit to reach that level of success and command respect.

Learning from Successful People

Personally, I’ve always been drawn to people who are at the top of their field. I love studying people who are doing well, seeing how they approach life and business, and figuring out how I can bring some of that into my life. For example, on my first date with my now-husband, I remember thinking how interesting he was and how much I could learn from him. He was like a wealth of knowledge.

So, how many of you out there see people and think, “I’d really like to pick their brains and figure out how they got where they are”? Learning from others can provide incredible insights into achieving success and respect.

A Story of Grit and Success

I thought I’d share a bit of a story to shine some light on this topic. Our first outing was all surface-level conversation. Since then, I’ve learned about the grit it took for my husband to achieve his success. His office was once in a rundown pack house, with a leaky ceiling that ruined his computer. Yet, he persisted, working hard and smart.

He often reminisces about the early days as an entrepreneur before I knew him. He even had to send his drivers out with a check in a Ziploc bag to the landfill because he couldn’t afford to pay upfront. This story shows that all of us will face hard times, and it’s up to us to decide if we will move forward and persevere.

The Expansion Experience

His journey embodies the essence of the framework I teach, the Expansion Experience. It all begins with awareness and a burning desire to make a difference. Despite challenges and naysayers, he stayed true to his vision. When you find something you love and are passionate about, it shows through and affects those around you—your family, friends, customers, and team members.

Operating from a state of awareness and in alignment with your values and purpose makes a significant impact. Passion transfers to others, creating a powerful momentum for success.

Embracing Change and Adaptation

You need a clear vision and a roadmap to guide you. From there, it’s about implementation and being unconventional when necessary. Things don’t always go as planned; change and challenges are inevitable. But this is where the real magic happens when you embrace change and pivot forward.

We once faced a significant setback in our business when a major account went to a competitor. Instead of wallowing, we reassessed, got creative, and brought new clients into our space. We strengthened our relationships with existing ones, and eventually, the lost customer returned.

Resilience and Flexibility

Success isn’t just about hard work. It’s about adaptation. To be successful in life and business, you must constantly tweak your approach, navigate setbacks, and evolve. Many people get stuck thinking they just need to execute their game plan, but when obstacles occur, they falter.

As a clarity coach, I work with clients to cultivate clarity and flexibility. The journey is about facing challenges head-on and growing from them.

My Final Thoughts

Reflecting on your journey, what are your aspirations? What’s been driving you? More importantly, how can you apply awareness and intention to carve your path towards success and respect?

The path to success is rarely a straight line; it’s messy, challenging, but incredibly rewarding. The Expansion Experience teaches a growth mindset—navigating life’s ups and downs with resilience and purpose. Those who use these techniques become intentional creators, building extraordinary lives.

Here’s my challenge to you:  Embrace the journey, the mess, and the magic of change. Let your passion fuel you, your resilience guide you, and your adaptability sustain you. You have the power to command respect, make a difference, and leave a legacy. Hustle hard, stay true to your vision, and become unstoppable. That is the true essence of respect.

Until next time, I have every bit of R-E-S-P-E-C-T for you.
