Can you believe the incredible weekend we just had? Mother Nature really turned up the charm and I’m getting so excited about the warm weather arriving.

But let’s be real, with the arrival of spring comes the dreaded pollen apocalypse. I don’t know about you, but I found myself engaged in a full-on battle against the yellow dust invading every corner of my life. Our patio, cars, and everything in between was literally yellow. And by Sunday morning, I couldn’t take it anymore. There I was, armed with a hose and a determined spirit, trying to reclaim my patio from the clutches of the pollen monster. And don’t even get me started on my poor cats – they looked like they’d taken a dive into a bag of Cheetos! I tell you, it was a scene straight out of a comedic movie. I had to wipe them down with damp clothes because I couldn’t imagine them trying to lick all that crap off of them.

But amidst the sneezing fits and the endless cleaning, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement bubbling up inside me. Spring has a way of doing that, doesn’t it? It’s like the world is waking up from a long nap, stretching its arms, and inviting us to join in on the fun.

As an Ayurvedic educator, I’ve always been fascinated by how this ancient wisdom can guide us in aligning with the natural rhythms of the seasons. Ayurveda teaches us that we are deeply interconnected with the world around us and that by tuning into the subtle shifts in nature, we can cultivate greater balance, vitality, and well-being in our lives.

And that’s exactly what I want to share with you today – a powerful framework rooted in Ayurvedic principles that can help you navigate the transition from winter to spring with ease and grace. It’s my 4-point Spring Transition Plan, and it’s based on four key principles: Rest, Reset, Restore, and Renew.

First up, let’s talk about Rest. Now, I know what you might be thinking—”But I just want to dive headfirst into all the spring activities!” I mean, there are baby showers, wedding showers, and Easter parties. Everyone is getting out, and there is a lot to do. Trust me, I get it. But just like marathon runners need to pace themselves, we need to give our bodies the rest they need to adapt to the changing season.

Think of it this way: When you plant a garden, you don’t just toss the seeds in the ground and expect them to bloom overnight, right? You need to give them time to germinate, establish strong roots, and gather the nutrients they need to thrive. The same goes for us. We need to create a solid foundation of rest to support our growth and well-being.

Establishing a consistent sleep schedule is one way to prioritize rest during this time. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of aligning our daily rhythms with the natural sun and moon cycles. Think about it: we lost an hour in the morning by springing forward for daylight savings.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been wrestling with my snooze button for the last two weeks, which usually doesn’t happen – trying to desperately cling to those 60 minutes of lost sleep. I told Alexa to set my alarm to Yiruma to gently wake me in the morning. Because I believe in nurturing myself, I’ve allowed myself one snooze for the next few weeks. Usually, I avoid the snooze button because I know deep down that snoozing serves no purpose from a sleep perspective, but darn, has it been a challenge to get out of bed – so one snooze allowance a day.   Believe it or not, this loss of sleep – that one hour – – 60 minutes can impact our rest patterns and lead to fatigue and grogginess if we don’t let our bodies adjust to the new time schedule. So yes, a snooze button allowance is in order while my body recalibrates and shifts to daylight hours.

Another thing you can do to help your body recalibrate is a consistent sleep schedule aligning with the natural sun and moon cycle. That means aiming to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends. Yes, even on the weekends. This will help regulate your body’s internal clock and ensure you get the restorative sleep you need to tackle the day ahead.

So, what’s one small way you can prioritize rest in your daily routine? It could be setting aside 15 minutes each day for a relaxing meditation or treating yourself to a cozy afternoon nap on the weekends. Whatever it is, make it a non-negotiable part of your spring self-care plan.

Have you ever noticed there will be a few warm days followed by cold this time of year? We were in the 70s this past weekend, and just yesterday, we were 55. It’s back and forth, and just like nature transitions slowly from winter to spring, we have to do that and adapt our habits and routines slowly. You don’t just click your fingers and boom! Enter the spring routine. No, it’s a graceful dance: listening to our body and watching what’s happening around us. Subtle tweaks all along. So, the next principle is RESET. Just like we swap out our heavy winter coats for lighter, brighter spring attire, we need to reset our habits and routines to align with the energy of the season. Resetting is all about making small, incremental changes to our diet, exercise, and lifestyle practices to balance the shifting qualities of the season.

Let me share a personal story that illustrates the power of resetting. It was back when we were in the garbage business. So, several springs ago I f, I  found myself drowning in a sea of stress and overwhelm. I had signed up for two programs simultaneously that were of interest. Then, of course, I had work responsibilities – I thought I could handle it all. Still, my days blurred in a whirlwind of deadlines, meetings, and endless to-do lists. I was running on autopilot, feeling a bit depleted and disconnected. I always look forward to spring because I seem to get that extra jolt in the late afternoon and seem to be able to work later and longer.

But this one evening, as I collapsed onto the couch after another exhausting day, I had an epiphany. I realized that I had been neglecting the simple pleasures that used to bring me so much happiness – like dancing – yes, I used to take ballroom dance classes  – this was pre-dancing with the stars back when I lived in Atlanta. I loved dance. And Mui Thai – every Tuesday and Thursday, I’d meet in the park with a buddy from work, and we’d practice. At that moment, on the couch, I realized I was all work and had no play.   It was as if I had lost sight of the vibrant hues of life amidst the chaos of my routine.

I was bound and determined to reclaim my sense of balance and vitality, so I hit the reset button on my lifestyle. Instead of only focusing on the relentless demands of my schedule, I carved out intentional pockets of time for self-care and creativity. I woke up a little earlier each morning to savor a little me time and indulge in a few moments of reflection instead of racing to get dressed, feed the cats, and get out the door. Then, I reconnected with my love of dance. I’m not dancing these days, but I’ll tell you what I’ve done – 30 minutes each day – me and the treadmill have a walking date. I’m telling you that pollen is just too much for me right now.

But every day, I’m on the treadmill, and I use that time to read—another hobby of mine that nurtures my love of learning and allows me to escape from the daily grind.

But here’s the thing: As I immersed myself in these nurturing rituals back then, and even today, something remarkable began to unfold. I felt lighter, more buoyant as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. The world seemed to show me new possibilities, and I found myself approaching each day with a sense of wonder and curiosity.

I don’t know about you, but another area I love resetting in the spring is my diet. I think it really packs a powerful punch. You know how during winter’s chill, it’s all too easy to cozy up with comfort foods that weigh us down? But there is something about spring and the warmer temperatures that my body craves freshness and vitality. In Ayurveda, they talk about honoring this shift by embracing seasonal produce and nourishing whole foods. And I’ve been doing just that.

I’ve been craving fresh fruits recently, and I can’t wait for strawberry and blueberry season, which is just around the corner.

So here’s my challenge: look at your daily habits and ask yourself, “What can I reset to better serve my well-being this spring?” It could be swapping out your usual afternoon sugar fix for a refreshing smoothie or committing to a weekly outdoor adventure with friends. Whatever you choose, make sure it feels authentic and aligned with your goals.

Speaking of alignment, let’s explore the third principle: Restore. Just as a caterpillar undergoes a transformation within the cocoon before emerging as a butterfly, we, too, must prioritize moments of restoration and rejuvenation.

One of my cherished methods for restoring my mind, body, and soul involves indulging in the healing touch of massages. I have found a massage therapist that is so intuitive. It’s like her hands have a radar to pinpoint the exact area of tension without me even having to tell her. On my last visit, she incorporated cupping, which I’ve never had before. I felt like she was lifting up the tension on my skin, dusting what was underneath, and placing it back down fully. A profound sense of relaxation and renewal comes with surrendering to a great massage and allowing the tension to melt away. And I’ll tell you massages not only alleviate physical discomfort but also nurture emotional well-being, offering a sanctuary for deep rest and restoration. I’ll never forget a lady telling me in my 20 to make sure I get my monthly massage and do it before you are married, so if my husband questions you, you can say I’ve always done it. LOL.

Believe it or not, I have friends who don’t like massage. I don’t know if they’ve just never had a good one or they can’t justify spending the money, but if you, too, are not a massage person, think about venturing outdoors once this pollen has subsided. There are plenty of restorative practices that don’t require spending a dime. Mindful walks in nature are great, or if you are a homebody – just Find a quiet corner of your home, close your eyes, and simply observe your breath as it flows in and out, grounding yourself in the beauty of the here and now.

Ayurveda, with its holistic approach to well-being, offers so many restorative practices that are perfectly suited for the rejuvenating energy of spring. When it comes to restoration, you are looking for practices to soothe the nervous system, alleviate stress and anxiety, and foster a profound sense of inner peace and equilibrium.

So, how can you infuse more restorative moments into your spring routine? You could schedule a weekly massage appointment to nurture your body and soul or dedicate a few minutes daily to mindfulness meditation.

Finally, we find ourselves at the fourth principle: Renew. Spring provides us with a blank canvas, inviting us to breathe life into our deepest dreams and aspirations. The year before last, I bought my mom a block of 80 tulip bulbs. In retrospect, I should have had someone plant them for her because I create a lot of work.

But all winter, you couldn’t tell anything was happening. Gradually, as the days became warmer, they started to sprout, and then all this beautiful color in her garden. It was incredible. All that to say, spring is a season of boundless potential, a chance to cultivate the life we yearn for—both in our external reality and deep within.

In the realm of Ayurveda, this concept finds resonance in the principle of “sankalpa,” or heartfelt intention. It tells us that we have to align our actions with the whispers of our hearts—essentially, we’ve got to trust that the seeds (or, in my mom’s case, the bulbs) we’ve planted will come to fruition. So, what dreams have been patiently awaiting their moment in the sun? What aspirations stir you with promise for the future?

This time of year is the perfect time to carve out sacred space to envision the life you desire. Think of it as “spring visioning.” And I’d go a step further into spring planning. In fact, I just sat down with my calendar for the next three weeks and went day by day putting the rocks of my life – the important things I wanted to accomplish on paper.  Because if you don’t envision and plan for the life you want, time will pass, and so will the potential.  Our growth is not a destination but a journey. Just as the tulips come up in the garden in their own time, we have to honor the rhythm of our own becoming. It becomes easier when we embrace each step with a bit of tenderness and foresight and celebrate the small victories along the way.

So there you have it, folks—your four-point spring transition plan: Rest, Reset, Restore, and Renew. These simple principles, rooted in the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda, can make a world of difference in how you experience this magical season.

So spring forward and make it a season to remember. Wishing you a season filled with growth and abundance.
