Are You Ready to Take It Old School? Today, I’d like to discuss why simplicity creates the biggest impact and how you can use this concept to improve your life.

We live in a world that glorifies the complex – the intricate diet plan promising rapid weight loss, the intense workout promising bulging biceps overnight, and the side hustle strategy assuring multiple six figures. We’re constantly searching for the next life hack, the next big innovation to revolutionize our productivity. And when it comes to self-improvement, we think the harder something is, the more effective it must be.

But what if I told you that sometimes, the simplest, most old-school habits can create the biggest change? Habits so simple you might even dismiss them at first glance?

Bear with me. In today’s high-speed, info-overloaded world, I know that can be hard to believe. But for just a bit, I think it’s time to slow down and get back to the basics.

Let me ask you something – when was the last time you felt truly vibrant, healthy, focused, and full of energy? It may have been a while if you’re like most people nowadays. We’re overwhelmed with responsibilities and distractions, leading us to “hack” every area of life in hopes of keeping up. And it’s daunting trying to figure out which idea is the best – the decision process alone is draining. But in the process, we’ve overlooked some of the most essential, overlooked habits that have served humans for centuries.

I’m talking about habits like drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning. Taking slow, mindful walks each day. Or carving out moments of stillness to calm the mind.

If you are on the complex is best bandwagon, these habits may seem ridiculously basic at first glance. It’s too simple to make any real difference, especially compared to all the self-improvement strategies out there. But I assure you, looks can be deceiving. When practiced consistently over time, these subtle habits compound into transformational change.

Why? Because they get to the root of supporting vitality – tuning into our bodies, finding the presence of mind, and appreciating simplicity for the riches it offers. Without making these foundations a daily practice, any self-improvement strategy built on top will struggle to thrive.

Intrigued? Still  Skeptical? Good. In the spirit of keeping it old school, I want to give you subtle habits you can implement this week that may change how you approach self-improvement forever.

Habit #1: Drink Warm Lemon Water Each Morning

This may sound underwhelming, but I assure you it works subtle magic…

For centuries, traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda, the world’s oldest holistic healing system, have recommended drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. At first glance, it seems too simple to make much difference. But this simple ritual has profound effects over time.

Let me tell you why: lemon juice kickstarts digestion and hydration after fasting all night. The warmth is soothing and grounding. The tartness stimulates bile production to aid digestion, cleansing the body of toxins that have accumulated overnight. It balances pH levels left acidic from stress and poor diet. Not to mention vitamin C and antioxidants boost immunity and energy levels. I’m sure they didn’t know the science behind it back in the day, but they were self-aware enough to know something was helping them.

Over time, when you incorporate the warm lemon water, this subtle flush optimizes digestion, cleansing, hydration, and alkalinity in the body. Which creates a ripple effect on everything from skin glow to stable energy to mental clarity throughout your day.

All from this humble little habit. As ancient medicinal systems have recognized for centuries, sometimes it’s the subtlest of solutions that have the most powerful effect when done consistently.

So, if you want to tune up your health from the inside out, start here. Commit to squeezing some fresh lemon into warm water (I prefer hot water with a cool splash to make it pleasant to drink) first thing when you rise. Sometimes, I add a pinch of pink Himalayan salt as well for electrolytes and mineral balance. My sister adds apple cider vinegar, but experiment and see what works for you.

Do this daily for at least 30 days. Observe how your energy levels stabilize, skin clears, digestion improves, and immunity strengthens. Sometimes, the simplest solutions really are the most profound.

Habit #2: Incorporate Mindfulness Moments

Now more than ever in our fast-paced modern world, cultivating presence of mind through mindfulness is essential. With endless stimuli and responsibilities clamoring for our attention each day, our minds and nervous systems are often locked into a stressed, reactive state known as “fight or flight.” I know you’ve heard this before, but how often have you sat down and, within a minute, decided, “I ain’t got time for this.” I was like that, too. If you want to hear my story on mindfulness, you need to check out Chaos to Calm in the resources section of www.truebasis.co. It will have you laughing while simultaneously wanting to persevere through the initial steps that most people get stuck on.

Here’s the deal: Taking brief mindful moments to calm and center has been shown to shorten this stress cycle. Restoring healthier nervous system balance and function for improved focus, creativity, vitality, and flow.

Again, it sounds almost too simple, right?. How can briefly tuning into the present moment really optimize health to that extent? Well, according to thousands of studies, yes, thousands. The subtleties of mindfulness compound over time to cultivate game-changing benefits.

Even just taking one to two minutes to close your eyes throughout your day, tune into your breathing, and release tension is profoundly restorative. Building up to longer 5-10 minute mindfulness sessions adds even more mind-body benefits. Here’s what  I recommend if you want to start weaving in mindfulness without overcomplicating your routine:

  • One mindful breath before meetings or tasks. Just one.
  • A five-minute mindful break mid-morning and mid-afternoon
  • Ten minutes of mindfulness meditation at the start or end of your day. You can even lay in bed when you do this one.

As you learn to dip into present-moment awareness more often, you’ll notice improved focus, emotional resilience, decision-making skills, and more. Over time, subtle moments cultivate enormous change from the inside out. And I promise you you’ll start craving the mindful moments within no time, and you won’t have to remind yourself to do them anymore.

Lastly, Habit #3: Take Daily Walks

Walk with me on one more subtler-than-it-seems solution PUN intended…the simple act of taking daily walks. In a world obsessed with hardcore high-intensity workouts, it’s easy to underestimate the power walking has to enhance health in body, mind, and spirit when done regularly.

But ancient wisdom traditions have long upheld walking as an essential meditative practice for cultivating presence, peace, and longevity. Science continues validating movement as one of the most powerful longevity boosters – walking, in particular, has unique benefits other workouts can’t replace.

For one, walking is gentle enough that you can do it daily and access the exponential benefits compounds interest provides over time. The moderate exertion increases blood flow, oxygenation, and motivation neurotransmitters without overstraining your system. The movement releases tension, integrates the left and right brain, and frees up creative inspiration. The exposure to nature and change of scenery is soothing and uplifting. If you want to make it fun and have an Apple watch, collect metrics. I love checking in on my heart rate, the distance, my pace later in the day. That sense of accomplishment and accountability continues to fuel my practice.

Even just 30 minutes of moderate pacing daily over months and years works wonders through subtlety and consistency. Lifelong walking habits ward off disease, elevate mood, optimize cognition and creativity into old age. Not to mention, provides a moving meditation that settles the mind wonderfully once you’ve tuned into its rhythmic pacing.

All that from an activity so simple it’s easily dismissed nowadays. But therein lies the beauty of old-school wisdom – sometimes, keeping it simple allows subtle power to compound over a lifetime.

The Takeaway

Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher and the author of the Tao Te Ching, essentially translated to “The Book of the Way,” speaks about embracing simplicity and returning to natural harmony. It’s a simple book with 80 or so short poems, but they really get you to think. Anyway, his quote says, “Health is the greatest possession, contentment is the greatest treasure, Confidence is the greatest friend. Non being is the greatest joy.”

Those are the essentials – health, contentment, confidence, and joy. As he says, prioritize presence and fulfillment from within, and you’ll have the greatest riches in life. So, while my three tips sound basic, I know that if you implement them, they will bring you incredible results.

Our world is so complex and intense that it craves quick fixes; we’ve lost touch with the power subtle habits offer through consistency over time. As anyone who has studied ancient wisdom will tell you, mastering simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and skill.

So, for today, the most effective self-improvement strategy can be summed up simply…

  1. Drink warm lemon water each morning.

  1. Take mindful moments to breathe deeply.

  1. Go for mind-clearing walks daily.

Simple? Yes. Boring? Far from it. As you implement these three things, watch your vitality awaken and your resilience grow through steady practice over months, years, and a lifetime. You will embody masterful wellbeing from the inside out. And as Lao Tzu says – “Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.” You can see why I like the book so much!

So,  are you ready to take it old school? Give the magic of simplicity a chance. Lean into these small yet mighty habits for 30 days. See what transforms through the power of subtleties, steadily.

The results just may surprise and inspire you back to what really matters.
